PHIXER for streamers: Twitch, OBS, and YouTube Live when headphones lie about mono fold
Stream mixes often sound huge in your cans and thin for viewers on phone speakers, single earbuds, Discord Stage, or VOD embeds. That is usually dual-PC routing, mic + desktop both open with latency, stereo game beds under voice, or a program bus that was never folded. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and path cleanup. It is not a stream mixer, and it does not replace a mono-check habit before you go live.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not Voicemeeter, not OBS filters alone, and not a substitute for muting duplicate capture paths. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights on stereo beds you must keep stereo (game bus, music beds, printed FX).
Why stream audio fails on viewer mono fold
- Headphones vs stream fold. Your monitoring is stereo headphones. Viewers hear Twitch / YouTube Live / mobile embeds that fold aggressively. Wide beds and dual speech paths hollow. Related checklist: Twitch / OBS / Discord live stream mono fold.
- Dual PC setups. Gaming PC + streaming PC via HDMI capture, NDI, or VB-Cable often stack mic, desktop, and Discord with different latency. Headphones mask the fight; phone mono cancels chest and game mids.
- Discord Stage and voice chat. Discord in the mix plus a separate mic path = identical speech a few ms apart. Stage listeners and VOD watchers fold hard. Mute duplicates; one hero voice path.
- VOD mono. Clips, highlights, and YouTube VODs often play on phone or laptop mono. What sounded fine live can hollow in the archive. Same family as YouTube / social mono fold.
- Stereo game / music beds under voice. Huge in cans, cancel under speech on fold. Center or simplify critical mid energy before spectral tools.
Fast streamer mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Solo the OBS / Streamlabs / Wave Link / VoiceMeeter program bus (not only headphones). Flip a utility to mono, or play a short VOD clip on a phone speaker.
- A/B mic muted vs open under desktop / Discord / game. Note what disappears: chest, consonants, game body.
- On dual PC: mute the capture path briefly, then the gaming-PC mic send. Note which path thins the fold.
- Confirm on a real phone speaker or single earbud. Correlation meters help; phones tell the truth for viewers.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. One hero voice path
Do not leave lav, headset, Discord, and desktop all open on the same talker. Mute duplicates. Stacked identical speech is the fastest hollow on fold.
2. Polarity if a path flips
USB interfaces, HDMI capture, virtual cables, and some DSP invert. Flip Ø when body returns immediately. Guide: when not to use PHIXER (polarity first).
3. Dual PC latency and levels
Align or mute the delayed copy. Prefer one clock domain for voice. Fix routing before you chase plugins on the program bus.
4. Prefer mono-safe delivery for clips and Stage
Highlights, Shorts-style cuts, Discord Stage, and many embeds fold aggressively. Keep critical speech correlated. Put width in the game sides that survive fold, not in fighting mics. Related: YouTube / social mono fold checklist.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a printed stereo game bed or music return must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Streamer path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Single PC + OBS | Fine in cans, thin on phone VOD | Mono utility on program; mute duplicate desktop |
| Dual PC (HDMI / NDI / VB-Cable) | Voice or game body cancels | One hero mic; fix latency / polarity |
| Discord + mic both in mix | Chest thins when Discord open | Mute Discord capture under mic; levels |
| Discord Stage / talk show | Listeners hear hollow hosts | One speech path per host; mono-check Stage |
| Stereo game / music bed | Huge in headphones, gone on fold | Mono-check bed; center critical mid |
| YouTube Live + VOD archive | Live OK, VOD clips hollow | Phone-speaker check before go-live |
When free PHIXER belongs in a streamer toolkit
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (game bus, music bed, stereo FX return), not a mono mic you fake-widened.
- Hero voice path, polarity, and dual-PC routing are cleaned up, but fold still hollows a band of the spectrum.
- You can A/B mono with the plugin bypassed and hear clearer body without wrecking the image.
- You are building a mono-check habit before go-live and on VOD clips, not using PHIXER to paper over three open voice paths.
- Budget is zero: free download on Gumroad (Win/Mac/Linux · VST3/CLAP/AU).
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chest thins when Discord opens | Mute Discord under mic; polarity | Stacked identical speech |
| Dual PC voice delayed / hollow | One hero path; fix latency | Two clocks, one talker |
| Fine in headphones, thin on phone VOD | Mono utility; phone speaker check | Headphones ≠ viewer fold |
| Stereo game bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mic alone is dull | Gain / EQ / placement | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned the program / VOD bus yet.
- The fix is obviously one hero mic, polarity, or quieter Discord under voice.
- You want PHIXER to make voice louder, wider, or to replace noise gate / EQ. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is level or tone.
- Full list: when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Solo program in mono → one hero voice path → polarity if a path flips → fix dual-PC latency → mute Discord under mic → mono-safe beds → phone / VOD check → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → confirm again on a phone.
